Here’s why we love the Bosch family of heat pumps, and specifically the IDS Ultra Cold Climate Heat Pump
Performance
The IDS Ultra Cold Climate Heat Pump is a new offering from Bosch. It offers an improvement on their existing line of heat pumps without sacrificing any benefits. Here are some key points of performance:
- Up to 2.1 COP at 5º – but what does this mean? In my professional opinion, co-efficiency of performance (COP) is the clearest way to understand how well a heat pump performs. The number simply reflects the amount of heat produced compared to the amount of energy used to produce that heat. A COP of 1 would mean 1 energy dollar used produced 1 equivalent energy dollar of heat. An example of this would be an electric baseboard. A COP of 2.1 indicates that for every dollar of electricity used, the heat pump is producing more than double the heat. And this is at 5º, which means it is energy efficient even at extremely cold temperatures. Yes, it has a high SEER2 and EER2 and HSPF as well. But the COP is the number to look for when shopping for heat pumps.
- Up to 100% capacity at 5º – The problem with heat pumps for years was that as it got colder outside, they lost efficiency and capacity. In larger homes, the system would rarely actually run as a heat pump and would defer to the auxiliary heat. This frustrated customers because they would spend money on a premium product but not actually be able to see the benefits. The IDS Ultra Cold Climate Heat Pump is able to work up to 100% capacity at 5º and is rated down to -13º. They have even tested it in temperatures as cold as -25º. If you have us out for an estimate, we’d be happy to tell you how they do this.
- Low GWP Refrigerant – The IDS Ultra uses r454b refrigerant, which is more energy efficient than its predecessors. All of our service, sales and install technicians have been fully trained and tested to work with this refrigerant to give you peace of mind with working with the newer technology
Reliability
Without using hyperbole, we will just give you our no-nonsense experience with Bosch. In the past 5 years, we’ve installed over 100 Bosch heat pump systems. We have had one that needed a fan motor. Thats it. Just the one. Our owners and 2 of our techs have the Bosch systems in their houses and we couldn’t be happier with them. We are a smaller family company and if we had issues with the product, we simply wouldn’t sell it.
Price
There’s no way around it – this stuff ain’t cheap. From the equipment we have installed and serviced in the field, this is the top of the line. Luckily, Bosch is a privately owned company and they are able to offer this premium equipment at a lower price point than its competitors. Throw in that we are a family-owned operation that typically prices 20-40% lower than our competition and you’ll find that this can be a great deal for you. You can get top-of-the-line equipment at a very reasonable price.
Rebates and Tax Credits
To help out with the price, there are state and federal tax credits and XCEL energy rebates to help with the cost of cold climate heat pumps. As of January 2025, this amount can total up to $10000 towards your new system. The catch is that you have to have a lab-tested and certified energy star system like the Bosch IDS Ultra for it to actually qualify. We’ve done the homework for you and will only sell you equipment that has a matching AHRI certificate that will qualify. We also do a proper commissioning of the system to ensure it is actually providing the advertised efficiency.
